VOLUNTEER WORK FOR TEENS

There is an abundance of volunteer work for teens.  I commend any teens that want to get out into the work force and start learning how to give to their community through volunteering.  Volunteers are always on short supply and almost all organizations need a helping hand, as well as many service business’.

Helping others shows just how unselfish you are.  And it gives you a chance to meet people from all backgrounds.  And more often than not, you acquire a lot of friends along the way.

Just because someone volunteers it doesn’t mean you come and go when you want.  It is like any job where you usually have set hours and are counted on to be there when needed just like any job.

Volunteering means you aren’t paid in cash, but you sure get paid in knowing you are helping those who can’t help themselves or doing something for your community that makes a difference.  It feels really good at the end of the day to know you could be of help.

Here is a list of ideas for volunteering:

  • Give Skaggs Hospital a call
  • Contact nursing homes in the area
  • The Boys and Girls Club   336-2420  You can assist with special events, referee games, help with light office duties, or help in the thrift store.
  • CAM (Christian Action Ministries) 334-1157 ask for Joan Westfall  Maybe you can help out in the food pantry and they are opening a thrift store and could probably use some volunteers there.
  • Table Rock Project Office Duty Station
  • Woodland Hills  ask for Denise Bevins
  • Salvation Army
  • Lifeguard at White Water
  • RSVP in Reeds Spring  call City Hall
  • Put an ad in the paper for a caregiver.  There are so many elderly or disabled that need a helping hand.
  • Keep trash bags in your car and stop anywhere to pick up the trash and make your community cleaner.  You can go along the lake, hiking trails, highways, or anywhere you see trash.
  • Call any of the parks and see if they need a helping hand.
  • Baby-sit for someone who is just starting a job or is low-income.  By the time they pay a baby sitter, they don’t have much money left for the things they truly need.
  • Knock on the doors of some elderly or disabled neighbors doors and see if they need some yard work done, house cleaning, or anything else you may be able to do.  There are so many things they can’t do anymore and need your help.
  • If you have access to a truck or trailer, offer to help someone move.  There are many single mothers, disabled, and elderly that would love the help. You can put ads in the paper or online at my website (send your ad to pelican4@kcnet.com and I’ll be more than happy to post it for you) and also put it online at www.hwy-13.com.
  • Whatever you are passionate about, look into doing volunteer work that has something that you are truly interested in.
  • There are a lot of lonely people that would love a visit from you.  You could just sit and talk, write letters for them, or read to them.  Ask if there is anything you can do for them.
  • Call Boston Community Center ask for Dorcia 334-0045 evenings or Steve at 335-8151 or Bonnie at 335-3537  They always have chores that need to be done from cleaning to yard work and often have a fundraiser you can help with.  It’s located north of Branson on Hwy 248 (about 8 miles)

If you hear an organization is going to have a fundraiser of any kind, call and offer to volunteer.
