Illness, divorce, or loss of a job can strip anyone of their assets finding themselves down and out. There is never a good reason for NOT reaching out and asking for the help you need. Ego’s don’t pay the bills or put food on the table. And you can always offer to volunteer if you want to “give back”. The very person you ask for help from, may possibly be the next person down on their luck and needing to ask for help too. There are no guarantees in life. Whether you need a job, housing, help with utilities, medical or dental help, help with an addiction, etc. this is the place you can find the resources. There are many organizations, churches, and volunteers that are designed to help those who are going through tough times. Most of them get money from those who donate for just that purpose or they get government funds intended to help those in need. The first step to getting out of the trouble you are in is to take the time to study this website. Get a pen and paper and write down (or print out) any information you need. Make the call or visit in person. Whether you live in a small town or out in the country, as long as you live in Stone or Taney County, you can find help on this website. Mother Earth News magazine and website has wonderful ideas for everything from building a house out of eco-friendly materials to gardening to building just about everything on a shoestring budget. It's well worth your time to spend some time on the website and go back to back issues too. A great many people have gone back to having a garden and learning how to freeze or can part of their harvest. You will be eating healthier and in tending to your garden you will be getting some exercise. Maybe you need a new hobby…..start baking your bread. That alone will save you 50 cents to $1.50 a loaf. If you use 2 loaves a week, it would save you a minimum of $52.to $156. per year. Learn to cook and quit buying ready-made meals and save a whole lot more than that. This is no time to be lazy or let yourself think you can’t do it. You most definitely can. And recycle within your family and friend circle. Maybe you have clothes you no longer can fit, but they can, and vice-versa. Recycle all your metals and get paid for every pound you collect. The money adds up really fast if you work at it. Do not run to the store for every little thing you need. It saves gas, wear and tear on your vehicle, and your time. Think ahead and make yourself a grocery list. Don’t buy anything that is not on the list. That alone can easily save you $1,000. a year or more. And if possible, don’t take the kids with you when you go to the store. Once in a while you can choose something inexpensive to take home to the kids. If you take the kids, start teaching them how to shop wisely and how to watch the prices…and to say “no” to yourself, if it is a luxury instead of a necessity. When they grow up they will thank you. If you don’t have a fireplace in your home, now is a great time to have one installed and start collecting firewood. It’s also great to have one when the power goes out or you can’t keep paying high utility bills. If need be, you can even cook using the fireplace. Make it fun and gather the family around. Look on the Mother Earth News website on how to build your own really cheap. Now is the time to start making things that you can recycle from around the house instead of buying everything. It can be very rewarding to see all you can do. Start making gifts, save money for yourself instead of helping the storeowners to get richer while you get poorer. It’s the smart thing to do. Recycle anything built out of wood to make furniture and items you need. Wood can be re-sanded, re-painted, re-varnished, or use the wood to build something entirely different. Don't throw wood away. Do the same with metals and plastics. If you know someone who has a computer, ask them if they would give you some lessons. Maybe you can barter with them instead of paying cash for the lessons. With the use of a computer you can look for jobs and put your resume in right there on the website. You can learn enough to get a better job. Information is endless on the computer. You can also learn more about insurance, social security, health care, or any financial info you might need. Get yourself a tool box and a few tools to help you repair items in and around your house instead of throwing it out and buying new. If it's already broke, how can you make things worse. You may just figure out how to take it apart and put it back together so it works again. Do a search on your computer for how to fix whatever it is that needs repaired including appliances and cars. Most libraries have computers you can use for free. All you need is a library card. Did you know most of the libraries not only have books but they have DVD’s you can check out free…and CD’s too. You can save a lot of money. And if you want to use the Green County libraries in Springfield, they charge $25.00 (please check to see if there has been an increase) a year for a library card for anyone who doesn’t live there. If you’re lucky enough to have a job, make sure you do everything in your power to do your very best so you don’t lose that job. Even if you want to change jobs, don’t leave the one you have until you have another one. If you’re not employed, your job every day from 9-5 is to look for a job. That doesn’t mean putting in one application and waiting. That means working at it every day. Hopefully, the job you get will have benefits. If you have children, try to find someone who also has children to trade babysitting with. One of you can work one shift while the other baby-sits and vice-versa. Neither of you would have to pay sitters……and all the money you earn will not have to go to sitters. You wouldn’t have to drag your kids out to your sitter but every other morning. And you would save on gas driving them to a sitter if you can find someone close to home. Branson vacation packages are great if you are having visitors coming in to visit. You can check with the Branson Chamber of Commerce to see what is going on in the area including inexpensive entertainment, go to the shows for residents to save money, walk around the Branson Landing, and visit www.explorebranson.com for more information. There is so much to do in the Branson, MO area. Most of the residents haven't even scratched the surface of all that is available. Silver Dollar City and Shepherd of the Hills has a lot to offer but pretty pricey for a family. The city parks and corp of engineer parks have everything from fishing, boating, tennis, basketball, and a lot of areas for walking surrounded by nature. www.vabenefits.vba.va.gov (for the $189.) and www.vabenefits.gov There are many links to help you find any type of help you may need. Don't be shy. Call and ask them what avenue they think you should take to change your life. They are there to help you. If you don't get the answers you need at one place, call more...you have more time than money so give it a try. You will probably be very surprised.
I know it's hard. People with low incomes are in a fight for their lives every day. I know you have felt beaten down and felt hopeless. I know you have gotten use to feeling there will never be a better future for yourself. But you've been lying to yourself. Step up to the plate and make the necessary calls to start changing your life. Take the first step towards a better future.
The days of kids hanging around their fathers learning
everything from fishing to woodworking to mechanics has changed drastically.
The majority of children have not been taught how to make money or
save money. They haven't been taught to do chores, learn to
cook, do laundry, or anything about running a house. Teach them
so when they move out on their own they don't make pricey mistakes or
have to struggle. It's your job to get them ready for life on their
own. And you get to spend one on one time with your child which they
love whether they act like it or not. Things like that are important to any child.
One day it will be important for them to know how to do these
things. But they need
someone to take the time to teach them.
Volunteer. If you're a mechanic, call Christian Action Ministries ( call 334-1157 and volunteer your time to help someone out who can't afford to pay to have a vehicle repaired. Or donate cash so they can hire someone to help.
